Anasthasia needs removal of a pre-cancerous lymph node from her right armpit. In this first part, Anasthasia is put to sleep and intubated for surgery....
Anasthasia is a little high from her premedication. While anesthesiologist Clara inserts cannulas and sensors, surgeon Fleur distracts her with reassurance that this is a very routine procedure and everything will be fine...
Flear examines Anasthasia's right breast to ensure there are no lumps or any signs the cancer has spread from the lymph node. It is of course also a good excuse for a grope. Fleur is satisfied that there are no abnormalities and only the lymph node needs to be removed
Whilst distracting Anasthasia with conversation, Clara checks that Anasthasia's lungs are healthy and clear and suitable for general anesthesia.
Anasthasia is now ready for the anesthesia mask...
So not to frighten Anasthasia, the mask is not immediately pressed on her face. Clara gently talks to Anasthasia while the theater nurse quietly injects propofol through her cannula
The Propofol takes effect - as Anasthasia losses consciousness, Clara finally applies the mask
With Anasthasia now anesthetized, Clara pulls her head back by the chin to keep the airway clear, and Anasthasia's lungs flood with oxygen and anesthetic vapor
Now it's a case of simply holding the mask in place until Anasthasia's brain and bodily tissues are thoroughly saturated with oxygen and anesthetic ready for intubation...
Finally, Clara decides that Anasthasia is suitably preoxygenated and at a suitable depth of anesthesia, and the theater nurse injects a powerful muscle relaxant that will render Anasthasia completely paralyzed...
Clara tests for paralysis by flicking Anasthasia's eyelashes to see if there is a reflex twitch of the eyelids. There is none, so Anasthasia is completely paralyzed and ready to be intubated...
Clara removes the mask and will insert a breathing tube, as Anasthasia cannot now keep her airway open or breathe on her own...
The retractor holds Anasthasia's throat open so Clara can insert the breathing tube...
While Clara holds the tube in place, the theater nurse inflates a rubber cuff round the tube to make an airtight seal in Anastasia's throat so no gas leaks out
The breathing tube is now connected to the anesthesia machine. The machine will now breathe for her and keep her system oxygenated and saturated in anesthetic
The tube is now taped to hold it in place and the eyes are padded and taped shut to stop them drying out...
Clara now monitors Anasthasia for some time to ensure she is stable under the anesthesia. It's also a good excuse for Clara to prolong enjoying having her completely under her control...
Goodness me! Is Clara putting a hand down her scrubs and touching herself???
Meanwhile, the theater nurse dresses Anasthasia in surgical stockings. Under anesthesia, the circulation can become sluggish and the stockings stop blood pooling in the legs, which may cause dangerous clots....
Finally, and a little reluctantly, Clara decides Anasthasia is stable and can be surgically prepped....
