Now considered obsolete, ether is an underrated anesthetic - cheap, easily stored and kept, chemically stable away from UV light and sources of ignition, and highly volatile, it induces deep and stable anesthesia.

It is however pungent, slow-acting and irritating to the nasal passages, so not great for inductions. It's best introduced after first sedating the patient with nitrous, then introducing ether vapor gradually into the mixture up to 5%.

With Frau Durlich heavily sedated under nitrous, Doreen loads the vaporizer with ether. Ether is much more volatile than modern fluro-alkane anesthetics, and so ether vaporizers are much simpler and easier to load and use...
