How an anesthesia machine keeps you asleep

Let's see how you're being kept asleep...

What you breathe out fills the rebreathing bag. As you breathe in, it's drawn out of the bag thru a soda-lime filter which takes out the carbon dioxide. You then breathe it back in mixed with fresh gases after it's been passed thru a vaporizer filled with anesthetic agent (see below)

As the gas is drawn thru the vaporizer, some of the liquid anesthetic evaporates. You then breathe this vapor in and it will keep you asleep.
